When I was first introduced to Christianity (by my evangelical Christian aunt and uncle), I decided to read the Bible, and see why my relatives were so obsessed with it. The Bible is a very long book, the King James Version is approximately half a million words, and I figured I could put forth 4 hours a day reading and have it finished in a few months, excellent summer reading program.
I started out reading with the only frame of reference I had from it was my experience with my aunt and uncle, which was this bizarre combination of prayer and punishment. Suffice to say, I never understood what gave them the right to harm another person who was not harming them, that is until I read the Bible, then I realized, within the first two books, that their god gave them this right.
To justify this concept of harming another person unjustly, their god gave them the right of ownership, to them children were property of the parents till they became property of their god, and you can do what ever you wish with your property.
The two fatal flaws of these vast religions is that they are the only religions on earth which advocate genocide and they are the only religions on earth which advocates ownership. How does a religion like this develop? Why haven't they been marginalized? Why do so many people find it acceptable to wipe out whole cultures and civilizations because their god said everything belongs to them and no one else? Anyone can see the hatred which the bible inspires, it is a book of pain and torment brought on by a god who kills indiscriminately and commands his followers to do the same.
Religion is there to help people. All people. It the place of our faith, where can be most at ease. I do not feel at ease in a place built upon the bones of the innocent.
It would not be so bad if they didn't pride themselves in their glorious battles against the unrighteous. They revel in the murder they commit, they justify it by saying they were being persecuted, and they commit more atrocities. When will this cycle of negativity ever end? How deep is this cycle? What exactly does this religion do to compensate for the damages it causes to the fabric of our delicate world when you can do what ever you want to the property you own because their god says they can?
Maybe it is time to break this theology of death and destruction.
